“So, are we going to talk about the fact that you went off on a suicide mission?” asked Jonesy, irritated, as Leah eased herself onto the sofa.

“Is it really relevant?” Leah asked, brushing off his concern.

“Jonesy’s right, Leah,” Nate said, sitting next to his sister. “You could have died taking that risk—”

“EVERYTHING IS A FUCKING RISK!” Leah snapped, taking both Jonesy and Nate by surprise and stunning them to silence. “This whole job is a bloody risk! The only thing we get to decide is what we’re risking it for! And I didn’t want to risk Jonesy’s life unnecessarily, so forgive me for caring! You are one of the best things in my life, Jonesy. I know I don’t do much to sell that, but it’s the truth. And if you die, then that will be on me. I don’t need that on my conscience.”

Jonesy felt as though they were going round and round in circles over the subject, so he sat down with her opposite Nate, giving Leah the feeling that she was being double-teamed. “Leah, I’m only going to say this once, so listen very carefully.

“I’m not above taking risks. But I am my own man. Every decision I have made is because I was in the driver’s seat. When I first partnered with you, I thought it would give me good career advancement to be partnered with a legend like yourself. But as I got to know you, I liked everything I saw. I could have turned you down several times. Contrary to popular belief, my brain isn’t dictated by my dick. I hooked up with you because I really liked you. I enjoyed your company. I liked getting to know you. And if there are challenges ahead, I want to be able to face them with you. I know the risk I am taking. That is not lost on me in the slightest. But it is a risk I want to take.”

There was silence for a moment as Leah digested the words. Finally, Nate spoke up. “I’ve got to say, as declarations go, that was certainly one of the better ones. You’d be an idiot not to lap that up.”

Leah picked up a cushion and threw it at Nate good-humouredly. “At this point,” Nate said. “I’m going to take my leave. I see you have a lot of talking to do.” He put on his jacket and headed for the door.

“He’s very persuasive, my brother,” Leah said as the door closed.

“Yeah, I wonder where he gets it from,” Jonesy said coyly before leaning closer to her. “So, what do you say? You want to give us another shot?”

Rather than respond with words, Leah leaned over and kissed Jonesy softly on the lips. He returned the kiss, a flood of relief washing over him. Suddenly, Leah started wincing.

“Oh, come on,” Jonesy complained, the romantic moment interrupted. “I can’t be that bad.”

“No, it’s not that,” Leah responded, grimacing. “It’s my crappy leg.”

“I’ll get some ice,” said Jonesy with mock annoyance.
