âSo, are we going to talk about the fact that you went off on a suicide mission?â asked Jonesy, irritated, as Leah eased herself onto the sofa.
âIs it really relevant?â Leah asked, brushing off his concern.
âJonesyâs right, Leah,â Nate said, sitting next to his sister. âYou could have died taking that riskââ
âEVERYTHING IS A FUCKING RISK!â Leah snapped, taking both Jonesy and Nate by surprise and stunning them to silence. âThis whole job is a bloody risk! The only thing we get to decide is what weâre risking it for! And I didnât want to risk Jonesyâs life unnecessarily, so forgive me for caring! You are one of the best things in my life, Jonesy. I know I donât do much to sell that, but itâs the truth. And if you die, then that will be on me. I donât need that on my conscience.â
Jonesy felt as though they were going round and round in circles over the subject, so he sat down with her opposite Nate, giving Leah the feeling that she was being double-teamed. âLeah, Iâm only going to say this once, so listen very carefully.
âIâm not above taking risks. But I am my own man. Every decision I have made is because I was in the driverâs seat. When I first partnered with you, I thought it would give me good career advancement to be partnered with a legend like yourself. But as I got to know you, I liked everything I saw. I could have turned you down several times. Contrary to popular belief, my brain isnât dictated by my dick. I hooked up with you because I really liked you. I enjoyed your company. I liked getting to know you. And if there are challenges ahead, I want to be able to face them with you. I know the risk I am taking. That is not lost on me in the slightest. But it is a risk I want to take.â
There was silence for a moment as Leah digested the words. Finally, Nate spoke up. âIâve got to say, as declarations go, that was certainly one of the better ones. Youâd be an idiot not to lap that up.â
Leah picked up a cushion and threw it at Nate good-humouredly. âAt this point,â Nate said. âIâm going to take my leave. I see you have a lot of talking to do.â He put on his jacket and headed for the door.
âHeâs very persuasive, my brother,â Leah said as the door closed.
âYeah, I wonder where he gets it from,â Jonesy said coyly before leaning closer to her. âSo, what do you say? You want to give us another shot?â
Rather than respond with words, Leah leaned over and kissed Jonesy softly on the lips. He returned the kiss, a flood of relief washing over him. Suddenly, Leah started wincing.
âOh, come on,â Jonesy complained, the romantic moment interrupted. âI canât be that bad.â
âNo, itâs not that,â Leah responded, grimacing. âItâs my crappy leg.â
âIâll get some ice,â said Jonesy with mock annoyance.
